Taking a lesson from professions with time honored public trusts have long had sets of professional ethics defined as personal and corporate rules that govern behavior within the context of a particular profession. Great examples include the attorney-client confidentiality standards, or the original physicians Hippocratic Oath summarized in First do no harm.
The practice and profession of direct response marketing has it's own set of unique skills, areas of specialties that, like any other profession takes many years of training, application and continuous study.
